White Mountains, Hawley Lake

We love eastern Arizona, up on the Mogollon Rim, where the pine forests and low rolling hills of the White Mountains belie the fact that you are at 7,000 - 10,000 ft. elevation. For years we rented a cabin at Hawley Lake on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, and enjoyed two weeks of painting, fishing, and quilting, the importance of each dictated by the weather and the appetites of the fish. Now we live year-around nearby in Pinetop, where I own Joyous Lake Gallery, and we still go up there for a week each year! Every day is wonderful!

      Evening, Hawley LakeII

The larger version: 24" x 30" - somehow they always turn out differently!

      Evening, Hawley Lake

A rough study for a larger painting of the magic of a Hawley Lake evening. No two sunsets are alike, although all are exquisite.

      Evening, Salt River Canyon

Salt River Canyon is the highlight of any trip to Tucson or Phoenix. Erosion has played its magic here, as it did with the Grand Canyon, resulting in wonderful rock formations that are particularly exquisite at sunrise and sunset. The rock itself is quite fractured, both laterally and vertically, and peeks through the thin layer of brush and trees. 11" x 14"

      Blue Heron

Part of the Pink Rain series. This blue heron waited for me, though the soft sunset rain might have had something to do with it. Just another magical Hawley Lake evening. 8 " x 10"

      Aspens, River Reservoir

Painting with the other artists from "Tucson Plein Air Painters in the White Mountains" at the River Reservoir near Greer, close to the New Mexico border. Note the bright sunlight - after several days of rain, lightning, and thunder! Sometimes the weather just won't cooperate. 11" x 14" framed.

      Hawley Lake, Green Shadows

The last day the Tucson Plein Air Painters were in town, I took a group up to Hawley Lake. Always wanted to paint these green shadows. Besides, it kept me out of the wind, which has turned the lake a deep blue. Some of the contemporary flavor of my larger work sneaked into my plein air work, too.

      Millpond at McNary II

Just before the aspens turn, the fields turn bright yellow with little Goldeneye daisies, millions of them! The abandoned millpond at McNary was exquisite. The old mill is a wonderful place to paint, and I like the way the land lays out. 9 " x 12".

      Copse Near Green's Peak

Green's Peak, at 10,000 ft. elevation, was way too windy and cold this day, but a little copse of trees at its base entranced us with its combination of rocks and aspens. 11 " x 14 "

      Leaving Hawley II

The entry to Hawley Lake has a wonderful canopy of aspen trees, stunning in the fall...I saw this spot from Elk Trail, and couldn't resist it, but chose to focus on a more intimate view.

      Sunrise Campground I

A gorgeous fall day at the campground next to the Sunrise Ski Area...fall is just starting, and after a monsoon-filled summer, it feels good to see the crisp sunlight and that deep blue fall sky...a color Maynard Dixon once described as "that deathless blue with soaring angel clouds." No clouds this day. 11" x 14 " framed.

      McKay's Peak Road

The road to McKay's Peak on the White Mountain Apache Reservation is crowned with autumn glory...and one of the coldest places to paint I have ever encountered! Face froze off. 15" x 20 "

      Blue Heron, Pink Rain

An exploration of the scene from Evening of the Pink Rain, below. I wanted to retain the slightly Asian feeling with the high contrasts and simplified color and play with the elongated format. 10" x 30" Contact Joyous Lake Gallery

      High Country Near Greer

This scene, from a great summer day, is on the way to Sheeps Crossing as you come out of Greer. Typical high country with wide meadows alternating with dense stands of trees. 24" x 32"

      Road to Sunrise, Summer:

The road to the Sunrise Ski Area in eastern AZ crosses several of these creekbeds carved into the lava. The lava underlayment is very typical for meadows throughout this area, as you can see by High Country Neer Greer as well. SOLD

      Pima Lane

Got a new panel holder to fit over the steering wheel in my car so I can paint comfortably in
cold weather! Love this scene, been eyeing it awhile. 8 " x 10" framed. SOLD

      Apple Orchard, Spring:

A client challenged me to do the same scene through all the seasons...and this orchard, right at the end of Trina Lane, is so evocative any time of year! 8 " x 16 ".

      Apple Orchard, Fall:

Fall in the apple orchard series, painted last year. 8 " x 16 "

      Near Reservation Lake

Painted during Paint the Aspens, a plein air show I organized last year. This little clump of aspens on the way to Reservation Lake was entrancing, and the fact that it was near some Banana Johns didn't hurt, either! 10" x 13". Plein air.

      Five Mile Wash, Winter

We love this wash just outside Holbrook. Its usually dry, but winter found it with snowmelt and even some snow under the bushes along the edge. Wind was bitter cold as usual, and the terrain difficult to set up in, so I snapped a photo and retreated to the car. 9" x 12".

      Edler Lake, Winter

Green in early summer, brilliant in fall, and somber golds and blues in winter (until the snow), this little lake is a favorite stopover spot for wildfowl. 9" x 12".

Lake Sunset

Again, my beloved Hawley Lake - last light of the day...its amazing how much light is still bouncing around at sunset...the lake still hasn't settled down from the day's winds. 20" x 28"

After the Storm

Fishermen hop right out to begin fishing as soon as the lightning passes over. Hawley Lake is a great recreation area, with lots to teach even the casual traveler. 20" x 40"

      Golden Autumn II

A couple of boys going crawdad fishing in the saturated light of a late autumn day bring focus to this study of aspens and pines reflected in Hawley Lake near the campground. 20" x 30 "
SOLD

Mist Off the Lake

Crisp autumn mornings at Hawley Lake are characterized by a soft mist that shines in the sideways light of early morning, but burns off quite quickly. Notice the duck in the larger version.
Commission.

Fall Color, Woodland Park

This park, in the heart of Pinetop-Lakeside, is a gorgeous, serene place, ablaze in the fall with oaks, aspens, and many other decidious trees layered against the soft green pines. The last light of day illuminates a small oak tree, turning it into a torch. Plein air. 8" x 10" SOLD

      Storm Clouds over Hawley Lake

One of our delights, being new to this area, is seeing the massive cloud formations and thunderheads of the monsoon season. And Hawley Lake, high in the White Mountains, gets its share. 8 " x 10" Painting is owned now by the CDC, Cabin rental place for the White Mountain Apache Tribe.
