The California Desert

This page is to honor the wonderful Mohave, including the Coachella Valley, with its fascinating rocks and canyons, wide vistas, and historic places like Indio, La Quinta, Palm Springs, and Indian Canyons. There's a real beauty here.

Many of these were painted during Desert Plein Air, November 2004, hosted by the La Quinta Arts Foundation. It was a wonderful, happy week of painting with a delightful gala Saturday night. Sunday morning, scheduled for a full day of selling to the public, however, found us ankle deep in rainwater inside a dark tent (no one dared turn on the electricity), contemplating Mother Nature and the SNOW on the surrounding La Quinta mountains. Snow! Can you believe it?

Indian Canyon Oasis:

Indian Canyon has these marvelous little pools and streams among the palm trees at the Overlook. Warm and cool at the same time. 20" x 24" , framed. Contact Joyous Lake Gallery

Trail, Andreas Canyon

This canyon area was evidently one of the summer camps for the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians, and is on their reservation. Cool oasis. I could paint this location many times over. Plein Air. 12" x 16", framed. Contact Joyous Lake Gallery

Dawn, La Quinta

One early morning I stumbled around La Quinta, trying to find a cup of coffee...and found this scene instead. I was so sleepy that it wasn't until later that I realized that I'd painted a parking lot! Plein Air
