| Utah is a beautiful land.
One of my favorite areas is Southern Utah, around Mt.
Carmel and Maynard Dixon's summer home. The Maynard Dixon ranch is now
maintained by the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts, a non-profit organization
furthering Maynard Dixons legacy by preserving his
estate and educating the public about his immeasurable
contributions to American art through educational tours
of his home, internships for working artists, workshops
and artist retreats.
The Ranch is worth a trip all by itself, but Zion, Grand Staircase, Cedar Breaks, Bryce, and the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park are all close by as well. Martha Saudek and I were lucky enough to stay at the Ranch in September, 2003... here are some of the paintings from that incredible trip. For a poem by Maynard Dixon himself, one that speaks volumes, click here: |

Zion is a magical place, with overwhelming rock formations and incredible drama. 9" x 12" |

Coral Pink Sand Dunes - Setting Sun This tiny park in southernmost Utah is a little gem and worth the side trip. Try to get there around sunset. The painting is a tribute to a magical evening spent shooting photos, drinking beer, and sketching as the sun set! 14" x 22" |

Staying at the Maynard Dixon Ranch, courtesy of the Thunderbird Foundation, I'm up at first light, no coffee, jeans pulled on under my nightie, trying to capture the first light as the dawn starts marching down the ridge. For a look at the scene a half hour later, see Morning Advances...Not for sale |

Morning Advances (30 minutes later) This painting takes place about half an hour after "Dawn Behind the Bunkhouse"...as the morning |

Staying at the Maynard Dixon Ranch, courtesy of the Thunderbird Foundation, I struggled with the irrigation ditch that passes through the Ranch - gorgeous morning light, backlit leaves and all that texture, are more difficult than it appears. After seeing the LA Art Show, and the Bingham Gallery's exhibit, I notice I have company. Its a hard subject, but it also defines part of the experience of the Ranch, as one must cross over footbridges of varying widths and stability to go between the only Bunkhouse and the rest of the ranch, including the bathroom in the middle of the night. I notice none of the other artists' renditions changed the ditch into an easier shape, either. As Mrs. Bingham noted, "Everyone does the ditch." Its a good group to be part of. SOLD |

This promontory is actually visible from the hill behind the ranch...where an entire armada of these magnificent monuments sail grandly in formation to the south. The entire area has this beautiful coral pink sand; in fact, nearby the sand drifts into dunes at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. |
